Lethargy

A state of sluggishness, inactivity and apathy of the dog or cat is known as lethargy (or listlessness). Symptom is also characterized by a loss of interest in enjoyable activities or exercise intolerance. Lethargy can be a sign of a chronic condition and life-threatening illness, and it is therefore always advised to visit the veterinarian. Lethargy is often caused by infections or medications.

How to Recognize

Your pet will appear fatigued and tired, and may sleep more frequently. Your pet may show a decreased interest in activity or appear weak.

Causes of Lethargy

Lethargy can be the sign of an infection, such as Heartworms or Kennel cough, or of a disease, such as Diabetes, heart disease, or liver disease.

Diagnosis

Lethargy is a common sign of many illnesses/injuries. It is important to seek veterinary care if your pet appears lethargic.

Treatment for Lethargy

Medication can also cause lethargy in animals, so be wary of any medications prescribed to your pet if they are already feeling lethargic.

Pet Insurance

When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
