Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a fairly common pet health concern that occurs when the membranes lining the eyelids become inflamed. These membranes, known as conjunctiva, protect the eyes by trapping dust and preventing bacteria and virus invasions. There are many causes of conjunctivitis in pets including blocked tear ducts, allergies, irritants, corneal problems and infectious organisms.

How Conjunctivitis Affects Your Pet

Conjunctivitis is not considered to be a serious pet health problem; however, if left untreated, your pet can experience varying degrees of discomfort in the form of itchy, runny eyes. Additionally, if the problem is caused by an infection, the problem may worsen over time and your pet could even become partially or completely blind. The good news is that conjunctivitis is easily cured.

Common Symptoms of Conjunctivitis in Pets: Redness of the Eyes, Watery to Thick Green or Yellow Discharge, Swelling of the Eyes, Blinking or Squinting, Sensitivity to Light and Pawing or Scratching at the Eyes. Conjunctivitis is not thought to be painful; thus, if your pet seems to be in pain, there may be an infection present. There are three types of conjunctivitis, and they are serous, purulent and follicular. Each type has its own causes; however, if your pet has any of these symptoms, you should seek treatment for your pet right away.

Treatments for Conjunctivitis

There are several options for treating conjunctivitis in dogs and cats. Your veterinarian may prescribe various drops such as Ocu-Clear, Immugen or Eye-Heal. Additionally, if there is an infection present, antibiotics, anti-bacterial creams and/or fungicidal ointments will be necessary. Finally, if allergies are causing the condition, anti-inflammatories will be recommended. There are many different natural remedies that can help with conjunctivitis as well. CoQ10 is an antioxidant that helps protect cells from free radical damage and enhance immune functioning. Vitamins A, C and E can also help protect the eyes. Bilberry extract, Zinc, Lutein, Quercetin, Astragalus and Coenzyme Q-10 are also great for eye health.

Breeds Affected

Any pet can develop conjunctivitis under the right conditions. This does not seem to be a breed specific or genetic condition. However, there are some conditions that make pets more prone to developing the problem than others. These conditions are listed below: Failure to Receive a Distemper Vaccination, Allergies, Excessive Exposure to Wind or Cold, Excessive Exposure to Dust or Pollen, Infections, Eye Irritations and Scratches, Bacteria, Corneal Disorders and Blocked Tear Ducts.

Pet Insurance

When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
