Constipation

Constipation or infrequent bowel movements in pet can have a very simple cause, such as a lack of fiber in your pet’s diet. However, infrequent bowel movement can also be a sign of a medical condition, which need to be treated. It is therefore always advised to consult a veterinarian to determine the cause. Also, changing your pet’s diet can affect your pet’s health in a bad way. Before changing your pet’s diet it is wise to consult a veterinarian for advise.

How to Recognize

If your pet has not defecated in two days, or strains or cries out while trying to poop, your pet is most likely experiencing constipation.

Possible Conditions

Obstructions such as a tumor or ingested pebbles may cause constipation. If your pet is not getting enough exercise or fiber in his/her diet, he/she may become constipated. Excessive grooming, matted hair, or dehydration may also be the cause.

Treatment for Constipation

Your veterinarian may provide your pet with medication or a laxative. A high fiber diet, increase in exercise, or increase water intake may be the answer to your pet’s constipation problem.

Pet Insurance

When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
