Just as with humans, there are many different health problems in dogs that are genetic in nature. Although the healthiest dogs seem to be mutts, there are several purebreds that are also less likely to require frequent trips to the veterinarian. 10 Healthy dogs are listed here:

  • Border Collies Not only are Border Collies  among the most healthy dog breeds, but they are also some of the most intelligent and friendly. These dogs belong to the herding group and were originally bred to herd livestock, particularly sheep.
  • Labrador Retrievers Labrador Retrievers  are gentle and active dogs that were bred to retrieve waterfowl. They are medium-sized, short-coated dogs that come in various colors including black, yellow, chocolate and ivory.
  • Beagles The Beagle  is another hunting dog that was developed primarily to track such small game as rabbits and hares. This is a sweet-natured, healthy dog that has short hair, comes in a variety of tri-colors and averages about 22 to 25 pounds.
  • Basenjis Basenjis  are most commonly known as the “barkless” dogs; however, they do make a yodel-like noise. They experience little to no health problems and enjoy long lives. These short-haired dogs originated from the Congo and average about 24 pounds full grown.
  • Shiba Inus The Shiba Inu  is a spitz breed that was developed in Japan and was originally bred for hunting purposes. While it is similar in appearance to the Akita, the Shiba Inu is quite a bit smaller, with the average male being only about 25 pounds full grown.

  • Bichon Frise The Bichon Frise  is a lovely little white dog with poodle-like hair. They were developed in Spain and Belgium as companions for sailors and are cheerful dogs that can reach anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds full grown.
  • Pembroke Welsh Corgis The Pembroke Welsh Corgi  is most known for its short legs, long body and large ears. These are herding dogs that originated in Wales and have been a favorite of Britain’s royal family for more than 70 years.
  • Shetland Sheepdogs Shetland Sheepdogs, or Shelties, originated in Scotland and were commonly used for herding sheep. While these sweet-natured dogs look like Miniature Collies, Shelties only mature to about 20 pounds full grown.
  • Siberian Huskies Siberian Huskies  are arctic dogs that were developed in Russia to pull heavy loads for travelers. These dogs experience virtually no hereditary health problems and their incidence rate for hip dysplasia is only two percent.
  • Rottweilers Rottweilers  originated in Germany and were used to herd livestock and pull carts. Today, they are used for many purposes including protection, search and rescue, and as therapy dogs. Furthermore, Rottweilers are generally hardy dogs that experience few health problems.
