Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

This breed can thank its larger ancestor, the Griffon Vendeen, for its good looks. Developed as a smaller version, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is not a hairy basset hound. For a long time the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen had the same standard as the Grand Basset, the only difference was the size (from 34 – 38 cm). The PBGV was as heavy as the Grand Basset and they were semi-crooked. The result in utilization was not very brilliant until M. Abel Dezamy created a separate standard for them. Quote from M. Abel Dezamy: ¨It is no longer a small Vendeen by simple reduction of the height, but a small Basset harmoniously reduced in all his proportions and in its volume, that is naturally endowed with all the moral qualities which presuppose the passion for hunting.¨ It was a team of PBGV’s that won the 1st edition of France’s Cup on rabbit.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small-sized dog breed, which has a long body and short legs. It looks somewhat similar to a basset hound, but has a more rugged appearance. It has a double coat with a dense undercoat and coarse outer coat. The coat needs weekly brushing.

This breed is about 14 inches tall at the shoulder. Like other bassets, it is heavily boned. The tail is saber-like and the nose is wide. The ears of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen are long, but not as long as those of other members of the basset family. The PBGV is a vigorous and active breed of dog, with a slightly elongated body. Its coat is hard and long without exaggeration. Its head is expressive and covered with long hair.

Personality

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a friendly and active dog. Its exercise needs can be met by long walks or vigorous play. It’s curious and playful, but also stubborn and strong-willed. It’s a good companion for children and friendly towards other dogs and strangers. It tends to bark.

This is a confident, happy breed that finds every person it meets to be a friend. Suited best for the active owner, this dog is happiest when exercising or hunting. Its independent nature does not reduce its desire to please its people. With consistency and patience, this breed can be easy to train. People familiar with typical basset hounds should not confuse the two. Where the basset hound is happy to live in an apartment and take up permanent residence on the bed, this breed needs regular exercise to keep its mind busy. The PBGV is a passionate hunter, courageous and likes the bramble and scrub. It is docile but passionate and wilful.

Appearance

If the dog has its typical wiry coat, it will need to be combed at least once weekly. Some owners choose to groom their dogs to lessen the grooming requirement. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen should have its ears cleaned once monthly. Toenails need maintenance on the same schedule as the ears, and teeth should be closely monitored due to the breeds’ beard. Just like the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, the double coat of the PBGV requires occasional hand stripping to preserve its functionality and look.
