Jug

The Jug is not a purebred dog. It is a hybrid, meaning that two specific breeds are crossbred to create a new breed. In the case of the Jug, those two breeds are the Jack Russell terrier and the pug. The first Jug was produced during the 1960s in the United States. The Jug is a popular household pet in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

A Jug is a mix between a Jack Russell Terrier and a Pug. Their appearance can vary from dog to dog, but they often inherit their Pug parents’ short muzzles, facial wrinkles and large eyes. Their coats are most likely short and coarse and probably don’t require a lot of attention.

Personality

The Pug and the Jack Russell both have high energy, so it comes as no surprise that the Jug is known for its high energy, playfulness and activity. This dog breed bonds closely with humans and are usually very affectionate, loyal and obedient. Thanks to their Jack Russell heritage, they are often very active and need plenty of exercise outdoors. They may therefore be less suited for apartment living than Pugs.

Jug Build Information

Since the Jug is a hybrid, some dogs will closely resemble the pug parent, exhibiting a curled tail and a pushed in face. Other Jugs will inherit a longer snout to look more like the Jack Russell terrier. Some specimens may look like a perfectly balanced combination of both parents. The only two traits that can be counted on are the size and the coat. A Jug is a small dog, standing roughly 15 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing an average of 20 pounds. The coat is short, and it may be any color that a pug or Jack Russell terrier coat displays. A Jug is a mix between a Jack Russell Terrier and a Pug. Behaviour and Personality

Jugs are intelligent dogs that are outgoing and active. They require plenty of opportunities to expend energy, and they need daily mental stimulation. They make ideal competitors in agility coursing. Jugs get along well with children, but other pets may be perceived as prey if the Jack Russell terrier’s hunting instinct dominates in the Jug. They make alert watchdogs. They can adapt to apartment living, but only if their extensive daily exercise needs are met. The Jug is a good choice for those who long for a small dog that possesses the liveliness and hardiness of the Jack Russell terrier and the endearing qualities of the pug. Appearance

Jugs require little grooming. Using a grooming mitt once a week will remove dead hairs from the coat and redistribute the natural skin oils to restore the coat’s shine. Pugs are prone to periodontal disease, so brushing a Jug’s teeth daily will be helpful in reducing plaque and tartar to prevent this condition. Weekly inspections of the ears and cleaning them if necessary will minimize the risk for developing ear infections.

Shedding: Moderate
Grooming: Low Maintenance

Jug Common Health Conditions

Jugs live average lifespans of 13 years. Jugs can be afflicted with the same health conditions that affect the pug and the Jack Russell terrier. Pugs are prone to patellar luxation, skin allergies, entropion, stenotic nares, seizures, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, keratoconjunctivitis sicca and nerve degeneration. Jack Russell terriers are essentially hardy, but they can also be prone to patellar luxation and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease.
