If you love spaniels and prefer larger dogs, consider the lovable Clumber spaniel. During the French Revolution, the Duc de Noailles of France spirited his spaniels away from the war torn nation to his British acquaintance, the Duke of Newcastle. They were given residence at the duke’s Clumber Park estate, where the dogs earned their name of Clumber spaniel. The breed soon became popular in England, where aristocracy welcomed the dogs into their royal circles. The Clumber spaniel was exhibited in a British show ring in 1859. Clumber spaniels made their way to North America, courtesy of a British officer who was bound for Nova Scotia. The American Kennel Club recognized the Clumber spaniel in 1884 as a member of the sporting group, and the Clumber spaniel was among the first nine breeds recognized by this institution.
The Clumber Spaniel was bred to retrieve so even though it has short legs, it is able to move fast and with agility. This dog breed is the stockiest of the spaniels and has heavy bones. It needs regular brushing and occasional bathing because its long white coat tends to get dirty. It also tends to drool. The Clumber spaniel stands 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 55 to 80 pounds. Clumber spaniels have rectangular bodies, deep chests, big bones, heavy eyebrows and short, powerful legs. A Clumber spaniel’s coat is long, soft, dense and weatherproof. Clumber spaniels are predominantly white with a few lemon or orange freckles and markings. The ears are triangular in shape and hang downward.
Personality
The Clumber Spaniel is a gentle and affectionate dog breed. It needs daily exercise in the form of a long walk. It’s good with children and is devoted to his family. It is aloof towards strangers but friendly towards other dogs. The Clumber spaniel is a happy and playful breed that enjoys outdoor activity. Although often described as a lovable slob that drools, sheds and snores, the Clumber spaniel is a loyal and affectionate family member that gets along with other pets and children. However, birds and small mammals that come into the yard are fair game for the dog’s hunting instincts. Clumber spaniels are reserved toward strangers. The breed may appear slow and lumbering at first glance, but these dogs have infinite stamina. They are intelligent, but they are also stubborn, independent thinkers, which can make training a challenge at times. Due to their size and their daily need for exercise, Clumber spaniels are not ideal apartment residents. The Clumber spaniel is a good companion to accompany hikers and hunters.
