Kromfohrlander

The Kromfohrlander originated in Germany, developed during the postwar era of the early 1950s. During World War II, American soldiers who were stationed in France came across a lovable stray, a grand basset griffon Vendeen, and welcomed him as their mascot. When the allied troops advanced in Germany, this dog that became known as Peter made his escape from the activity and resumed his life on the streets. He was ultimately rescued by Ilse Shleifenbaum, the wife of a German lawyer. When Ilse bred Peter to a fox terrier, the offspring were identical to one another in appearance, and their temperament and behavior mirrored that of Peter. Ilse took on the commitment to develop these dogs as a consistent breed for companionship, hardiness and good disposition. The ravages and hardships of war-torn Europe had a detrimental impact of the overall dog population, leaving many breeds threatened with extinction. The efforts of Ilse and other dedicated breeders played a pivotal role in saving and restoring some breeds and in developing new ones. The Kromfohrlander is the youngest dog breed to come out of Germany. The rare breed has also been kept in Denmark, Switzerland, Finland and the Netherlands. The United Kennel Club recognized the Kromfohrlander in 1996, and the breed was first shown in America in 2013.

The sturdy, medium-sized Kromfohrlander stands 14 to 18 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 19 to 34 pounds. Their coats are either smooth or rough. Unlike the smooth-haired variety, the rough-coated kromfohrlanders display beards on their chins. The coat is white with markings of tan or brown, and the brown hairs may be black tipped. The ears are triangular and flip forward when the dog is relaxed, and the tail is long.

Appearance

Kromfohrlanders require minimal grooming. Brushing the coat once a week removes the dead hair and minimizes shedding. Brushing the teeth every other day maintains optimal dental and overall health.
