Change in color of the gums and/or the tongue to purple or blue. Blue gums and/or tongue doesn’t always have to be life-threatening, for example, in some breeds blue gums and tongue are common. However, in case it is not common, it is advised to visit a veterinarian to determine the cause and to choose the treatment.
How to Recognize
A pet’s gums or tongue will appear a bluish – blackish color.
Causes of Blue Gums Tongue
There are several possible causes for blue gums or tongue. An obstructed airway, inhalation of smoke, or trauma to the neck area may be the cause of discoloration. Conditions such as Heartworms and Pneumonia can also be associated with blue gums and tongue.
Diagnosis
Your veterinarian or you, if possible, should immediately check for an obstructed airway. If there is no apparent intrusion or trauma, your veterinarian will test your pet for conditions that may be associated with a blue tongue or gums.
Treatment for Blue Gums Tongue
If your pet’s airway is compromised, seek emergency medical attention immediately. If your pet appears to be breathing normally, contact your veterinarian to learn if the discoloring is abnormal in your pet’s breed.
Pet Insurance
When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
