Hair Loss

The dog or cat experiences a patchy hair loss, an increased loss of fur and/or bald spots on the skin. Hair loss is often caused by a mite, although it can be caused by an infection, trauma, or immune disease. Hair loss can often be treated by a topical shampoo or antibiotics. Consult a veterinarian to determine the cause and the treatment.

How to Recognize

While all pets shed, if your pet has excessive hair loss and/or noticeable bald spots, it could be a sign something is wrong.

Causes of Hair Loss

While it is normal for all dogs to shed, bald spots are not normal. Allergies could be the cause of hair loss in your pet. If this is the case, the hair loss will commonly be accompanied by itching and/or redness. Hair loss could also be due to sores, parasites, or stress. Diseases such as Cushing’s disease, which is the overproduction of cortisol, can also be associated with hair loss.

Treatment for Hair Loss

You should seek veterinary care for your pet if they are shedding excessively. If your pet is suffering from allergies, your veterinarian will provide your pet with medication.

Pet Insurance

When adding a dog or cat to your family you want to make sure your pet is happy, healthy and protected. During its lifetime your pet is exposed to many illnesses and diseases and some breeds are affected by a congenital disease which is a condition existing at birth. At these moments when your pet is ill or maybe needs surgery, you want to be protected for the unexpected and high veterinarian costs.
